The Heiresses by Sara Shepard
From the author of Pretty Little Liars
Synopsis:
The only thing more flawless than a Saybrook solitaire is the family behind the diamond empire. Beauties, entrepreneurs, debutantes, and mavens, they are the epitome a of high society. Anyone would kill to be one of them. But be careful what you wish for, because if you were a Saybrook, you’d be haunted by secrets and plagued by a dark streak of luck.
Tragedy strikes the famous family yet again when thirty-four-year-old Poppy, the most remarkable Saybrook if them all, flings herself from the window of her office. Everyone is shocked that someone so perfect would end her own life…until her cousins receive and ominous threat: One heiress down, four to go.
In the after math of the tragedy, the remaining heiresses–Corinne the perfectionist, Rowan the workaholic, Aster the hedonist, and Natasha the enigma–wrestle the feeling of sadness, lost, guilt and, most of all, fear. Now they must uncover the truth about their family before they lose the only thing money can’t buy: their lives.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book from a Goodreads giveaway so that was pretty exciting! I’ve never gotten an ARC before so I was super excited to start reading my first Sara Shepard book.
Let’s just say I was pretty indifferent to this book. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t exactly hate it either. The characters were meh, I didn’t really like any of them. The plot and mystery was the usual Sara Shepard stuff secrets, secrets, secrets, threats, and oh look, more secrets. But I will say, I did NOT see it coming.
First of all, the beginning of the book introduced a lot of characters all at once so it was very confusing and made my head spin it was hard remembering throughout the book it was hard remembering who was who.
When I read the synopsis literally the first thing that popped in my mind is, “Hey look, 5 girls. Oh and one of them dies.”
*cough* Pretty Little Liars *cough*
There were so many characters but I just didn’t find myself caring for any of them. I like to love all of the characters in books. There were times that I was trying to find one thing I liked about one of them but then they’d do something stupid. All of them made me so upset and annoyed.
Overall it was an okay book. I was pretty disappointed though. I am very grateful for the ARC, so thanks GoodReads! I hope Sara doesn’t drag out this series because this book could have been a stand alone is she’d left some parts out. I’m trying hard not to sugarcoat anything, so sorry to burst anyone’s bubble but to be frank it seemed like this book was pretty much an adult version of Pretty Little Liars. If you’re looking for a book with just a great mystery in it then this book is for you. But if you’re looking a book with great character development and life lessons then I probably wouldn’t read this book right now.
2.5 out of 5 stars

I have a bit more to say, but I’ll add the rest once the book comes out and more people have read it! I will say though, I’m not sure I like getting ARC’s, you can’t discuss with anyone because no one else has read the book!
Thanks for reading!
The Heiresses comes out May 20th.
